Developing a Mission Statement to Recapture Your Passion

Developing a mission statement over time keeps it relevant, powerful and inspiring. As you learn and grow your purpose will also mature. At certain points you will wonder what is next, consider second careers or fall into a mid-life crisis. This is just because there is no final product. Life this is an ongoing process.

Each of the initial building blocks, from finding life purpose, is liable to change over time. By being aware of these and incorporating them you will stay focused, motivated and inspired.

Being

This part of who you are is the most fundamental and so will transform the slowest. What is most important to you is likely to mature over time rather than completely change from one value to another. This happens as you shift from fearful to love-based motivations by choosing a career which is fulfilling.

For instance, the value of independence might initially be held to avoid reliance on others. This could stem from a fear of being let down. When independence has been achieved this value may mature into interdependence.

Any fixed way of being has its benefits and its limitations. As the limits of independence are reached the fearful motivation that created it can be let go.

Then the value is free to evolve to a higher way of being. In this case to interdependence, by being open and sharing in such a way that it elevates the person beyond the limits of rigid independence.

Doing

When you gain experience through developing your practical skills and talents new opportunities will open up for you. Managerial roles for instance require a certain level of experience.

These new options give you the chance to play your vision on a bigger scale. So as you take these opportunities, what you do to fulfil your purpose will change.

Having

This is the aspect that will change most often through developing a mission statement. The career objectives you set will eventually be achieved. To maintain the sense of direction developed by finding life purpose you will need to set some new goals. Building wealth involves planning. You will stagnate if your purpose is defined by yesterday’s achievements. Fulfilment today occurs in the context of your aspirations.

It is wise to stop every few months to reflect on developing a mission statement. What being, doing and having shifts have occurred, and how can you incorporate these? How inspiring is the current expression of your purpose? If it is lacking, then re-visit finding life purpose to embrace the new evolutions.

As you mature so too will your purpose. This process of renewal will add power and intensity to your purpose. Developing a mission statement in this way will propel you forward towards an ever more fulfilling career.
